Diet, Obesity and Health: New Approaches for the 21st Century

About the speaker: Carmen Piernas is a nutrition scientist currently working as Research Fellow in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford. She obtained her PhD in Nutrition and Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (US). Her principal research interests lie in the prevention and management of non-communicable chronic disease through dietary improvements, in particular obesity and cardiovascular disease.
About the event: Dr. Piernas started her talk by introducing the audience to the importance of adopting healthy behaviors to prevent non-communicable diseases, including following a balanced diet and achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. She then discussed the potential ways to improve diet and prevent obesity, including policy and government regulatory actions which help shaping consumer choices. She also talked about her current lines of research, which lie on the development of new approaches to encourage people to adopt healthier lifestyles. In particular, Dr. Piernas explained a new project funded by the UK Government that involves the participation of supermarket chains like Tesco and Sainsbury's which will be offering their customers new tools to easily identify the healthiest food options. After the talk some of the attendees and the speaker walked to The Mitre pub, where the conversation continued over drinks and "healthy" food.
