About the speaker: Jordi Gracia is Professor of Spanish literature at the University of Barcelona. His field of expertise is Modern Spanish culture and literature, especially under Franco’s regime and during the period of transition to democracy. He has published many books on the subject, among them La resistencia silenciosa. Fascismo y cultura en España (2006), which won the prestigious Anagrama Essay Prize. His is a usual presence in the pages of the Spanish newspaper El País and its culture supplement Babelia.


About the event: In this year, that marks the 40th anniversary of the Spanish constitution, there is a substantial public debate about the merits and faults of Spain’s transition into democracy from Franco’s dictatorship. In his talk (in Spanish) "Una cultura sin equívocos: democracia y Transición en España" Prof Gracia will examine the most important aspects of the transformations experienced by Spanish culture in its evolution in a democratic society, and all the tensions and contradictions it went through in the process. 

This event will take place in Magdalen College Auditorium on the 2nd of March, at 5.00pm (entrance from Longwall Street). After the talk there will be a Q&A session with the speaker.
